Unlocking Bodipy Dye Synthetic Methodologies with 1H-NMR Monitoring and Continuous Flow Techniques

An optimized synthesis of BODIPY dyes has been developed by combining batch and continuous flow techniques to enhance efficiency. Rapid formation of dipyrromethane was indicated by ¹H-NMR monitoring, with completion observed within 2 minutes, in contrast to traditional reaction times requiring several hours. The condensation and oxidation steps were integrated into a continuous flow process, after which borylation was carried out in batch mode. BODIPY derivatives were obtained with yields of up to 84%.

Through this approach, the formation of side-products was minimized, purification was simplified, and gram-scale production up to 26 g per day was enabled. As a result, the applicability of these versatile dyes has been broadened.
