Metal-free [2+2]-photocycloaddition of unactivated alkenes enabled by continuous flow processing

A continuous flow approach for generating bicyclic cyclobutanes from unactivated alkenes in a metal-free manner, inspired by the Kochi–Salomon reaction, is reported. A filtered Hg-lamp, in combination with a simple flow setup and acetone as a UV light-absorbing co-solvent, was found to be crucial for this method. Attractive features for further exploitation are thereby showcased.
