Different chemistries place very different demands on a flow reactor. Reaction phase, mixing, heat and mass transfer, temperature and pressure can all influence the choice of reactor when developing a continuous process.
Vapourtec has published a new Reactor Guide that brings together the technical information needed to compare these different approaches. The guide provides a single reference covering the range of reactor technologies compatible with Vapourtec R-Series and E-Series flow chemistry systems.
The guide covers tubular reactors for homogeneous chemistry alongside reactor technologies designed for more specific requirements, including fixed-bed reactors for heterogeneous reagents and catalysts, CSTRs for reactions involving solids and multiphasic mixtures, and dedicated reactors for photochemistry and electrochemistry.
It also covers reactor technologies for more demanding operating conditions, from cooled tubular and fixed-bed reactors capable of operation down to −70 °C to high-temperature tubular reactors operating at temperatures up to 250 °C.
For each reactor technology, operating ranges and key characteristics are presented alongside examples of chemistry for which the reactor may be appropriate. Researchers can compare factors including reactor volume, temperature and pressure range, materials of construction and residence time when considering the most appropriate way to approach a reaction in flow.
