Photocatalytic Amino and Alkoxy Carbonylation Reactions in Flow Using [Co2(CO)8]

A cobalt mediated photocarbonylation reaction, whereby [Co2(CO)8] acts as a catalyst and carbon monoxide surrogate, has been developed and translated to flow for the preparation of amides and esters. The flow process is technically straightforward, does not require CO gas handling, includes a membrane separator to facilitate in-line purification and can produce amides in multi-gram quantities. Modest-to-high yields of amides and esters were achieved within 1-2 h residence times. A competitive hydrodebromination side-reaction was observed and quantified under these conditions, relative to desired carbonyl-containing products. This presents the first demonstration of an eIective cobalt photocatalysed carbonylation reaction in flow.
